Alicante Golf Club, Alicante Costa Blanca

Alicante Golf Club is one of the strangest courses I have ever played as it is set in an urbanized part of town with various housing developments on every hole. You cross under the roads many times in specifically designed 'buggy tunnels' and thankfully a buggy comes with your green fee. The other strange thing is the fact that there are six Par 3s, six Par 4s and six Par 5s. I can't think of another course in Europe that has this layout. The Pines course at Hardelot Golf Club in Northern France is similar (5, 7, and 6).

This Seve designed course has some superb holes but if you are not straight you will be punished as on most of the course is OOB on both sides of the fairways and at behind many of the greens.

The club house, along with the welcome, is superb and this is a definite experience that must not be missed if you are going to play golf in the Costa Blanca.

Course Review

Hole 1 is a Par 5 at 471 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.17
Alicante Golf club starts with this long Par 5 and the fairway is very undulating with bunkers either side of the fairway waiting to catch a wayward drive. On the second shot be aware of large fairway bunker bang in the middle. There are bunkers both sides of the green awaiting any inaccuracy.
Wow…A Birdie start for me!

Hole 2 is a Par 4 at 342 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.5
There is long stream on the left of the fairway, swimming pool on the right (out of bounds of course), and large lake far left which reaches the edge of the green. There is a large bunker on the right if you go the coward's way. So in all this entire hole proves very difficult to stay safe. Close you eyes and make par, like me :

Hole 3 is a Par 3 at 142 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.15
Teeing off over corner of the lake there is a large bunker and a tree at the rear that protects a green that slopes back into the lake you just comes across. Quack, Quack oops! 5 for me.

Hole 4 is a Par 5 at 469 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.13
Wide fairway with bunkers left and right of the rough. The lake sneaks into the hole and wayward 2nd shots may get wet at about 140 yards out. The lake wriggles around the green, and there is a large 'Pot' Type bunker just at the lip of the green. Bogey here for me.

Hole 5 is a Par 4 at 393(Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.3
Make sure the drive is straight and not the left (bunker). There are an additional two bunkers that protect a relatively small green. Par again here.

Hole 6 is a Par 3 at 182 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.11
You get a great view of the flag from the tee; don't be afraid to use your driver (mine didn't get there) as the wind can come in from behind you. There are large bunker on the right that will catch any poor effort to lay up. Two lager bunkers at the rear just in case you hit too long. Up and down in three for a bogey 4.

Hole 7 is a Par 4 at 406 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.1
A slight Dogleg left, with bunkers placed in all he ideal landing points. A 'horseshoe' shaped bunker awaits any slices to the green which is 'liver' shaped and difficult if putting right to left. 6 will do on this S.I 1

Hole 8 is a Par 3 at 201 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.7
Alicante Golf Club really starts to get tough now as the houses seem to be getting closer. A small green here is protected by two deep bunkers, keep right of flag to avoid as left is quite tight. Par 3 here is welcome. :)

Hole 9 is a Par 5 at 505 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.9
Seve has made his mark on this hole by making the shape of the lake into a
'S'! However, no need to worry about this as the lake is at the green. You have to negotiate the long straight fairway before you arrive at the green which is also protected by bunkers as well as the "S" shaped lake. Miserable 7 for me here!

I played the second nine as 'scramble' so I didn't record my score.

Hole 10 is a Par 5 at 457 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.18
Lake to the left, three bunkers and palm trees on the fairway. Two small bunkers at the front of the sloped green.

Hole 11 is a Par 4 at 395 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.6
This hole has a large wide fairway, with big bunkers right and a few smaller bunkers to the left. A triple bunker to the left of the green, a very tricky hole.

Hole 12 is a Par 3 at 134 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.16
A short par 3, teeing over water to a large green with no bunkers.

Hole 13 is a Par 4 at 409 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.2
Keep your tee shot straight or ideally left to avoid water on the right. The fairway is lined with trees, and bumps and hills make a good lie rare. However a large green helps to keep par possible.

Hole 14 is a Par 5 at 497 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.12
A par 5 with real difference! The tee shot is straightforward however 'Roman Ruins' possibly come into play on your second/third shots! These were unearthed during the construction of the course and are now designated as 'ground under repair'. Interesting hole!

Hole 15 is a Par 3 at 212 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.4
Long Par 3, with Kidney shaped bunker protecting a large rounded green. OOB on all sides of this hole.

Hole 16 is a Par 5 at 487 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.14
Long Par 5, with many trees aligning the tight fairway. The sloped green has a large bunker on the right and an even larger lake on the left.

Hole 17 is a Par 3 at 187 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.8
Two huge bunkers will catch any over hit or hook tee shots. The main danger though is the water to the right, don't slice it! The water at the tee boxes is also a little intimidating as well.

Hole 18 is a Par 4 at 350 (Metres) from the White Tees and S.I.10
I do hope you have the game one by this hole! Teeing over water, a stream and trying to stay out of the fairway bunkers make this first shot a difficult one. Then hitting the green will be an achievement on this difficult par 4 as the lake appears again and there are some huge bunkers on the right hand side.
