Antequera Golf Course18 Holes 6000 metres Par 72 Location:- Costa Del Sol The amplification of the Antequera Golf Club has had the backing of business people, institutions and sporting bodies. It now has 55 hectares of land on which to hold important competitions. The Antequera Golf Club has made an investment in quality tourism, and its 18-hole golf course, a par 72, is the first to have been built in the northern part of Malaga province. The enlarged course became a reality, thanks to the hard work of the Golf Antequera S. L. delegate, Ramón Jimenez. "He has achieved things we thought impossible in Antequera. The club now has a hotel, a golf course and a list of projects being prepared," said Paulino Plata, delegate for Tourism, Commerce and Sports in the Junta de Andalusia. In the Gandia area, Golf Antequera S. L. has managed to stimulate growth in a region that was deteriorating, said the mayor, Ricardo Millán. The first stroke was made on the new course by Paulino Plata on the 18th green, a par three. The amplification of the course with the additional nine holes has meant that the new playing area is now 55 hectares in surface area, and can be used for amateur and professional competitions of all kinds. The inauguration of the new course was followed by a gala called 'A Night of Art in Antequera', which Canal Sur television screened on June 9th. The course was designed by José María Cañizares, under the supervision of Rodrigo Villegas, manager of the course. Francisco Carvajal Almansa is the green keeper. The course is 6,000 metres in length and has a total of ten lakes. The water in them is collected in winter to be used in the summer months. Antequera Golf Course is situated 650 metres above sea level, and is surrounded by the El Torcal nature park. Plata believes it necessary that golf courses function with quality tourism, and refers to them as "our factories." They are necessary, he went on, "so that employment and wealth is generated, and that tourism works as a quality product." With the building of Antequera Golf course, the number of courses in Andalusia has risen to 78, and many more are in the pipeline. "There are new projects and many opportunities to build more courses," the tourism chief added. He expressed his belief that golf courses "are the basic tools" of the tourism sector in Andalusia, and that the golf industry will break the seasonal aspect of tourism in the entire region. "Golfers come here when there is no sun and beach, and they fill our hotels from October to springtime. This is the time they cannot play golf anywhere else on the continent," he said.
