PGA Golf de Catalunya, Costa Brava, SpainPowerful, moody, and breathtaking, the PGA Golf de Catalunya is a special
place. It was a dream for almost a decade before finally realising its
massive potential in the spring of 1999. Pines and bent cork oaks shroud
the landscape and holes drape over the swinging terrain leaving their
trail of green rippling through the forest. Hole 1 is a Par 4 at 396 (meters) from the white tees and HCP 3 Favour the right half of the fairway to open up the hole. A 3-wood might be the club, because the water hazard/dry lake on the left is only 234 meters away from the yellow tee. Hole 2 is a Par 4 at 354 (meters) from the white tees and HCP 5 Beware of this slightly blind tee shot, the further you drive, the narrower the fairway. Make sure you have enough club into the green as there is rough marshland just short - a severe slope pulls anything short back into the that dell. Hole 3 is a Par 5 at 489 (meters) from the white tees and HCP 13 A fabulous hole! Reachable by the longest hitters but dangerous for all, since the green is set hard against a lake. Keep to the right of the fairway and then aim for the middle of the green wherever the flag is. Hole 4 is a Par 4 at 380 (meters) from the white tees and HCP 9 Blasting away with a driver is not wise since the shot is blind and water lurks on the left. Keep it right and on the flatter part of the hill and its perfect for a more controllable approach. Hole 5 is a Par 3 at 191 (meters) from the white tees and HCP 7 No real safe place to be apart from the fat of the green. If the flag is on the left, aim for the middle of the green and the slopes should take the ball towards your target. A fantastic hole! Hole 6 is a Par 4 at 375 (meters) from the white tees and HCP 11 The only real uphill drive. Aim for the big tree through the fair way but make sure you work the distance out first as the hole swings left and you can run out of room. A long approach is required to carry the bunkers shrouding the green. Hole 7 is a Par 5 at 487 (meters) from the white tees and HCP 17 Time to open your shoulders. Two big hits might see you home but if you can't reach, it is best to play short of the traps close to the green even though there's room to land over the first one. Dangerous bunkers protect the green and the hole plays shorter than it looks. Hole 8 is a Par 3 at 170 (meters) from the white tees and HCP 15 Beware of going long as everything falls away around the back and right. But if the flag is on the top shelf you can attack still as there is plenty of room above the rise. A deep bunker lurks at the back. Hole 9 is a Par 4 at 427 (meters) from the white tees and HCP 1 Tough, uncompromising, and the longest par-4 on the course. Worthy of its S.I. 1 rating, play it as a par 5. A severely sloping green will tax your putting touch too. Best to be front left and so putting uphill most of the time. Golf Holidays Abroad Course Review Hole 10 is a Par 4 at 397 (meters) from the white tees and HCP 12 It gently meanders downhill and the green is framed by pines and mountains. Don't let the view put you off as this classic par-4 can be dangerous. You can work your ball in from the left towards the flag as there is quite a big swing on the green. Hole 11 is a Par 3 at 173 (meters) from the white tees and HCP 16 Teasing but not as difficult as it might seem. It falls 13 meters so it plays at least one club shorter than normal. The green may look small but you have at least 25 meters between the bunker and the water at the back. Another fantastic par 3! Hole 12 is a Par 5 at 491 (meters) from the white tees and HCP 14 Once the water is avoided the safest line is towards the row of five trees on the left of the fairway. If you are lying up, make sure that you are far enough back to clear the huge oak on the corner if you have gone slightly left. Again, not as far as it seems. Hole 13 is a Par 4 at 365 (meters) from the white tees and HCP 6 Elevated tee so let it fly but please be straight or there is no second shot. Err on the long side towards this almost 'Island' green where there is plenty of room through the green, and keep your approach lefty of a flag cut on the right side since the green falls away sharply to the lake. Hole 14 is a par 4 at 408 (meters) from the white tees and HCP 4 A straight and ordinary hole that long hitters can carry the bunker on the right and the ball should feed down the middle of the fairway, leaving a short iron in. Avoid the good bunkering and aim to be short left of any flag to leave an uphill putt. Hole 15 is a Par 5 at 461 (meters) from the white tees and HCP 18 The sensible line is to aim for the large oak through the fairway, since only the biggest hitters can clear the corner. It is uphill all the way for only the second shot so add at least one club. A bunkerless green. Hole 16 is a Par 3 at 186 (meters) from the white tees and HCP 10 There are no prizes for being short, as there is a valley, or right as the green and slopes sweep the ball away, but try to be under any hole as the green tilts from back to front sharply. Hole 17 is a Par 4 at 423 (meters) from the white tees and HCP 8 Be strategic on this elevated tee and aim to land your drive short and right of the fairway bunkers, since going left is bad news. Avoid the front bunkers on this kidney shaped green and let the big slope help you move the ball into a back left flag position. Hole 18 is a Par 4 at 415 (meters) from the white tees and HCP 2 There is more room right than left, and if you are to miss the green,
short right in the three low bunkers is not a bad place to get up and
down from. The two bunkers left are more dangerous.
