Tecina Golf Course - The island of La Gomera6,343 metres and a par 71 Architect: Donald Steel From August 2003, Golf enthusiasts can enjoy the pleasure of playing the Tecina Golf course. Tecina Golf is situated at the Tecina valley at the playa de Santiago. The Golf course has 18 holes spread over 54 hectares area and the length of the course is 6,343 metres with a par 71 and a very interesting challenge. Tecina Golfs architect, Donald Steel who among others, has created the new St Andrews course, has given his well-known creativity free rein in this ambitious project. It is an absolutely unique experience to look across the beautiful valley, with a fantastic panorama view of the Atlantic Ocean from every green. From the first tee to the 18th green at Tecina Golf descends some 175 meters providing a plethora of stunning viewpoints with the sparkling ocean providing an omnipresent backdrop. According to course director, Carlos Beautell, the major attraction for both pros and amateurs lies in the design by Donald Steel, a design that is spectacularly different from any which exist in the Canary Islands today. Tecina Golf has been built with particular attention to the environment, maintaining the native vegetation in order to integrate totally without causing any environmental disturbance. Tecina Golf has unique characteristic of the course lies in the fact that the first hole is 175 meters above the eighteenth hole, and the clubhouse. This has forced the positioning of the first tee two kilometers away from the clubhouse. To overcome this hurdle, an internal path has been incorporated, enabling golfers to travel directly to the first tee with their buggy. Alternatively, there is a minibus service for the clients who prefer not to rent a buggy. Despite the above-mentioned complexity of the course, Donald Steel has managed to make each hole uniquely exciting, particularly holes 2, 4, 10, and 18, all notable for their incredible views. The most difficult holes, due to their length, are probably the 5th and the 16th, although for its difficulty and the necessity for precision, the tenth could also prove to be a real challenge for most players. An outstanding feature of the Tecina Golf is the combination of greens and bunkers, representative of a very British design. If there is a slight breeze, shots onto the greens can be quite demanding with every small mistake penalized. On -the other hand, the fairways are generous, inviting the player to hit the ball freely. Another feature at Tecina Golf is that it can't fail to capture your eye is the astounding array of flora incorporated into the design; palm trees, fruit-trees (mangos, bananas and avocados), aloes, gazanias, agave, geraniums, flamboyanes, jacarandas, tipuhanas, rubber-plants (several hundreds years old), and partitions of bougainvillea all combine to illuminate the course with a spectacular palette of colours. How to get there:- The island of La Gomera has good ferry-connections to Tenerife thanks to the Fred Olsen S.A. FastFerry, and a new airport ensures connection to the island for small aircraft.
